AR4701 Billie

In the first session with Billie, we basically have to concentrate on mind mappings and generating ideas. We were given a word ‘joy’ to start creating mind maps about the things, memories and feeling which comes to our minds when we think of joy. The image above is highlighting a mind map of all the things and feelings which I connect to the word ‘joy’ in my life.

Next we were supposed to choose one thing from the mind map. I decided to choose holidays to Pakistan. In addition I just extended the mind mapping and mentioned the things which are included in the holidays.

After deciding final thing which brings joy, we were then given some words such as touch/feel, taste, sound, colour and shape and connect each word with the chosen thing bringing joy, In my case it was holidays to Pakistan, In general I would say it is Pakistan and the memories which are connected with Pakistan. In the above image, an extended mind map can be seen demonstrating and highlighting how I have connected Pakistan with all the given words.

At this point, after connecting the list of words with Pakistan such as sound, feel, colour, shape and touch. We were asked to visually present each word. For example, I have associated Pakistani food and street food with the word taste and so on and then I have visually defined each word in the form of quick sketches.

In the above image, a rough storyboard can be seen that I have created in some seconds without thinking about clean and clear concept and create whatever comes to mind if I have to create a video about Pakistan.

In the second part, we were asked to create different versions of logo design associated with the chosen word, in my case it was Pakistan.

dav

After the logo design, we were asked to write the word in a specific font or typeface which will associate the word with the typography.

dav

If the word was a puppet, what it will look like and I have created a puppet made of stars and rectangle associating it with Pakistani flag and used moon shape for hands and legs with green colour.

In the last part, we were asked to join any two ideas together to create something and It ca be anything. I decided to join the puppet with one of the typography style to create a happy logo to represent Pakistan and used a logo with typography again to create a professional logo.

SELF-REFLECTION:

  • The session was really interesting and innovative in terms of creativity in the form of tasks to generate loads of ideas associating with the given word ‘joy’.
  • I have started the session with nothing and ended up with having most creative ideas and work in the form of logo design, typography, a storyboard and a cartoon puppet which I feel would definitely will help me in the coming project if we have to work on this brief which is to create a video, illustration art piece, poster, graphic design based work and so on.

SESSION 2:

  • In this session, We researched different visuals for the words we develop from the ideas. In my case, it was traditional Pakistani food and street food, Hugs, hand holding, culture of Pakistan. I researched different and interesting visuals for each of the words from Pinterest and other websites.
  • After finding the visuals, I printed out all different visuals connected with my words and selected one image to start the next process of ideas generation.
  • Having the selected image in the center of the sheet, we were asked to symbolise the visual. I selected the image of hand holding and started to symbolise the meaning or idea in the form of a symbol.
  • Then we were given a task to duplicate, extend, layer and rescale any idea (symbol) and experiment with any of the creative process to develop un expected and unique results.
  • In the last we were given a task to convert the visual into a 3d object idea of any kind.

SELF REFLECTION:

  • The session was interesting and creative in terms of extending the basic ideas into further progress.
  • It was quite interesting how we are creating unique ideas and concepts only by a single word joy and the idea generation is getting extended and creative in each session.
  • I started with having only visuals printed associated with the words and ended up with unique and amazing symbols and 3d object ideas.
  • This technique is really creative and I feel I can use this technique in the future to come up with variety of amazing ideas.

SESSION 3:

In this session, we were asked to create some story boards of any thing that brings joy, In my case as I have decided Pakistan as my joy, I explored the colour associated with Pakistan and its culture. After doing some more in depth research and combining my understanding of colour knowledge, I started creating mood board of each colour and how each colour is connected to Pakistan in different areas such as food, culture, dress, nature and so on.

MOOD BOARDS:

SELF-REFLECTION:

  • In this session, I create some storyboards based on the word Pakistan.
  • I selected all the colour connected to the country and find visuals of different places, things, elements etc from Pakistan to make the main colours.
  • By creating the story boards, I discovered amazing colour palettes from all the different visuals which I might use later on for my projects.
  • I like this creative technique of story boarding different elements and merge them together to discover unusual and interesting results.

SESSION 4:

SELF REFLECTION:

  • In this session we were asked to create our own 5 colour palettes based on the mood boards from the last week.
  • I selected the main colour theme that I already used for the mood boards of the visuals that I created.
  • After the colour palette, we were asked to draw shape, lines and silhouette from the images on the mood-board.
  • I found the first part interesting where I created 5 different colour palettes of my own choice. The other technique was quite helpful where we were asked to draw the outlines and silhouette of the visuals from the story board.
  • I would say that the tracing technique in the form of shapes and silhouette will be useful to use specially if I will be working on a logo design or graphical project etc in the future.
